Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut Formerly Known as: Broughton Island
Qikiqtarjuaq is called the iceberg capital of the world. The northern cape near the town captures many of the icebergs that travel down Davis Strait from Greenland. This area is rich in marine mammal wildlife and you can see:
- Right whales
- Ring and Harp seals
- Beluga whales
- Narwhal
- Walrus
- Killer whales
in the waters off Qikiqtarjuaq.
Enjoy the walking trails on the island that offer splendid arctic scenery. You can climb the meandering trails to the inukshuk on the hill overlooking the community. Climb one of the granite outcrops to get a bird's eye view of the community and entire island. Bring a pen and a small slip of paper and leave your name inside the inukshuk that stands on top.
Near Qikiqtarjuaq the rugged peaks of Baffin Island offer spectacular beauty both from the air and on the ground. These mountains are the highest in North America east of the Rockies. |
